Migraine Therapy: Prevention

Migraine is a genetically encoded predisposition to developing pronounced headache attacks, and in principle it cannot be cured. Still, this doesn't have to be endured helplessly — there are many ways to influence how the condition presents, and above all, how often attacks occur.

Daily structure

A consistent daily structure — particularly consistent wake and bed times, both during the week and on weekends — is recommended first. This also includes regular mealtimes and adequate fluid intake. A headache diary can help identify triggers, such as specific foods, so they can be deliberately avoided.

Relaxation & exercise

Relaxation techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation (Jacobsen/PMR) or autogenic training have a proven effect and should be practiced at least 3 evenings a week (e.g. with an app or guided audio). Regular endurance exercise — especially jogging or Nordic walking outdoors — also helps reduce how often attacks occur. Running-type exercise should be done 2-3 times a week for about 30 minutes.

Other measures

Stress management programs (e.g. online courses) have also proven effective. Acupuncture has shown benefit for many patients, though it is not covered by statutory health insurance in Germany. Biofeedback is an increasingly important technique. Daily magnesium (2 x 300mg/day) and/or vitamin B2 (400mg/day) are also likely effective, without significant side effects.
